Not sure if the problem is caused by xserver-xgl. But i have the same problem, 
thanks for the reproduction tip :)
Checking the ~/.xsession-errors file (saved it before i logged on again), i

Today i received a firefox and a kernel update linux-image-2.6.24-20-generic 
(2.6.24-20.38).
Running Xgl with Compiz and xfce4 on an ATI Mobility X1400.

Basically, the xserver crash happens when you scroll down a very long
page. In some seconds the gdm login screen appears again and i'm able to
login again to a new session.
