Same behavior as Sebastian Bengtsson.
The 2.6.24-20.38 kernel now boots fine : the current problem seems to be
resolved in my case (Athlon XP 3200+).
But I have exactly the same issue with the graphic card : flickering then low
resolution.
Mine is a nvidia Geforce 6200 SE, with the proprietary drivers ("nvidia" driver
in xorg.conf) installed by the ubuntu wizard.
I also came back to 2.6.24-19...
