Hi! You just need to cat the value while in textmode. Just switch to another VT, log in and then use 'sudo su -', then cat it into /proc/acpi/video/NVID/LCD/brightness. Supposingly, the NVidia drivers prohibit ACPI interfacing when you're in X.
