Public bug reported:

I wiped my Windows machine a few days ago and installed the Kubuntu Edgy
release candidate. I then apt-get updated this current today. Over 50%
of the time (before or after the updates) I am unable to get the machine
to boot and display the login screen. It displays the initial "Kubuntu"
screen with the progress bar; the bar goes all the way across, and the
monitor clicks when it changes display modes, and then nothing appears
and the machine is unresponsive. Once hung, I cannot hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 to
get a terminal and have to hit the PC's reset button.

Looking at /var/log/messages, it gets past the messages about Bluetooth
from the kernel and then hangs. The next items in the kernel logs when I
am able to get it to boot are from gconf. I believe these appear when it
does display the logon screen and I enter credentials.

Once running, the machine seems to run great. I don't have any operational
problems until startup or shutdown. It does sometimes hang on shutdown as well.
When this occurs, it repeatedly:
* Shows the "Kubuntu" screen with the progress bar
* Has some hard disk activity
* Changes display mode and causes the monitor to 'click'
* Again shows the "Kubuntu" screen. This went on for some time before I reset
the machine.

Please help. I used Kubuntu 6.06 on an alternate machine and loved it. I
don't want to have to reinstall Windows!
