Public bug reported:
I suspect this is an NTFS-3G (ntfs-3g 1.2216 external FUSE 27 - Third
Generation NTFS Driver) issue, but I'm not certain. When copying files
between Ubuntu Hardy 8.04.1 and Windows XP SP3 (NTFS partition) on my
computer, the filesystem sometimes becomes damaged. It is worth noting
my system is running a Highpoint 372 soft RAID controller, so dmraid is
also involved.
Initially the damage is limited to Windows-only (Linux sees the
partition just fine and it is not marked dirty). To Windows, the damage
results in a Stop 0x24 error. Once, this was recovered from the
Recovery Console with chkdsk just fine, but on two other occasions, this
has resulted in the Recovery Console stating "Directory enumeration
error" and chkdsk just has a giant cow and fails.
Eventually, the entire partition shows up as empty, though still
formatted properly. I have also had this happen within only a single
directory with the syslog entry:
Aug 2 10:23:28 fishtank ntfs-3g[4564]: Trying to read non-allocated mft
records (61265 > 43600): Illegal seek
Aug 2 10:23:28 fishtank ntfs-3g[4564]: ntfs_mft_record_read failed: Illegal
seek

I wouldn't generally report this with so little info, but this results
in such a big problem. Let me know what other information I can provide
and I'll be glad to try.
