I moved the contents of the directory to another temporary directory and
rerun the upgrade script. A message came up, that said I should run sudo
apt-get install -f and then rerun the upgrade script again. I did this.
Half way through the upgrade, the x server was shut down and did not
come up again, complaining that the ati module was not found. I then did
a sudo dpkg --reconfigure -a. This finished the installation of the
other packages, but x still did not come up. I did a sudo apt-get
--purge remove xserver-xorg-video-all && sudo apt-get install xserver-
xorg-video-all package and this did the trick. My system is running fine
with edgy now. Not something you would call a smooth upgrade path, but
at least it works. YMMV.
