A few days ago I found out that one of my two RAM modules became defect.
After exchanging it the problem described above went away.

The reasons why I didn't find it earlier are:
1. When I first mem-tested the RAM about 1 year ago it didn't show any errors
2. In case of memory corruption I was expecting much more problems like system
crashes etc., particularly since I was running Ubuntu in VMWare from Windows.
However I only noticed occasional Firefox crashes and assumed Firefox being the
culprit (beta version).
However, finally I also had a Windows crash and a few other things which made
me suspicious.

So after all this was not an OpenOffice problem and the report can be
closed.
