I repeat: shutting down with WindowsXP is clean and doesn't produce any 
sounds, the harddrive spins down silently.

This means that using Ubuntu, the power is cut before the head is 
automatically parked so the drive has to perform emergency head park 
(which emits this noise, and wears the drive more quickly).

Can someone who knows the shutdown procedure of Edgy Eft please give 
some help?
