LyX does recommend latex-xft-fonts, which should cause it to be
automatically installed when LyX is installed. I think there is no
reason for LyX to depend on latex-xft-fonts.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: lyx

When editing equations, the \cdot and \times symbols look the same. Both
look like a x. I tried changing the screen font but they still look the same.
I am using Lyx 1.5.3-1 on Hardy.
Lyx 1.5.3 on Windows does not have this problem. \cdot looks like a dot and
\times looks like a x.

I also checked with Lyx 1.5.5 on Fedora 9. The problem does not appear
  there.
+
+ LyX should depend on latex-xft-fonts.
