When I first installed Ubuntu on the LiveCD using this moitor (ViewPanel
VPA150) I had to use safe graphics mode to get the proper resolution. If
I did not the resolution seemed way too large and focused off screen.
However after installing I had the opposite problem; the resolution was
too small. It was 800x600 after logging in and at the GDM. The proper
resolution seems to be 1024x768, but considering the VPA150 is 15" or
19" I forgot, I think 1152x864 might be supported although I am not
sure. Anyway, after tinkering with xorg.conf, I have gotten the right
configuration. GDM was fixed after changing the vertrefresh and
horizsync values, and I could choose 1024x768 resolution under
System=>Preferences=>Resolution after adding the Subsection Display
under Monitor I believe. I am not sure if this will help you in fixing
this problem (if you actually care about this legacy hardware :) but I
will add my working (and if I can find my non-working)xorg.conf as an
attachment. Also, before fixing my xorg.conf, Ubuntu would give me a
warning before displaying the GDM that I was running in low graphics-
mode. It told me it could fix the problem by configuring my hardware.
The panel said it recognized my graphics card (Nvidia TNT2, really
legacy) but not the monitor. I selected Viewpanel VPA150 from the list
and chose 1024x768 resolution from the list, but nothing happened as far
as my resolution is concerned.
