This bug was fixed with Wesnoth version 1:1.4-2 in Debian.
Unfortunately, Ubuntu 8.04 uses Wesnoth version 1:1.4-1. Assuming you
are running Ubuntu 8.04, you can use a later version of Wesnoth
(1:1.4.3-1) from hardy-backports.
To enable the backports repository, go to System -> Administration ->
Software Sources. Enter your password if necessary. In the Updates tab,
under Ubuntu updates, check the box next to Unsupported updates (hardy-
backports). Then click Close and Reload. You should then be notified of
an update to Wesnoth.
Once you have upgraded Wesnoth to 1:1.4.3-1, try running the following
commands to start the small GUI:
wesnoth-smallgui
wesnoth --enable-smallgui
Please confirm if this works for you.
