gchaix was able to demo this problem to me, and I can confirm the error
message Bryan mentioned in #6.
/usr/bin/X11/X: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input//fpit_drv.so:
undefined symbol: xf86IsCorePointer
xinit: connection to X server lost.
The changelog for the 1.2.0 version we now have in Intrepid indicates
this issue is fixed. gchaix will be upgrading his system and
confirming.
