I temporarily added the Debian unstable repository to my sources.list
(Ubuntu 8.04) and upgraded to Wesnoth 1:1.4.4-2 from there. So far, I
see no problems with Wesnoth; the game runs fine: I can play campaigns,
multiplayer games, and save/load.

I used Prevu (an automated backporting utility) to build Wesnoth on
Ubuntu 8.04. No errors compiling. Again, I tested Wesnoth as before and
experienced no problems.

This bug's description contains the notes on the latest changes from the
Debian and upstream changelogs. According to the upstream Wesnoth
project, "This is a bugfix release for the stable 1.4.x branch. In this
release several smaller bugs were fixed and many translations were
updated."
