I get the same thing, however I've noticed it crashes only when I connect to my home IMAP 4 server (courier-imap), if I connect to work exchange server its fine as well as another provider I have who's using dovecot, I believe.
Like the OP, the problem is reoccuring, after deleting my mozilla- thunderbird directory Thunderbird works fine until the point I re-setup my courier IMAP account and it crashes again. Some other specifics: Ubuntu Dapper & Edgy, Intel Core Duo (Doesn't crash running the same version of TB on my AMD Gentoo), both i386.
