This is a normal behavior of the boot process. Every 30 boots or so, the system will run a routine check of your filesystem. Depending on your filesystem size (in your case a 160GB Maxtor drive) it may takes a few minutes to achieve. When you hit ESC, you cancel the check and the boot process will continue but the filesystem will remain "unclean". You can see that in your log file with the following message: [ 74.367441] EXT3-fs warning: maximal mount count reached, running e2fsck is recommended
The best thing you have to do is to wait for the end of the check.
