Public bug reported:

Running Ubuntu Hardy x86_64. When I select "Quit..." from the System
menu, things freeze for about 45 seconds. During this time, I can move
the mouse, but no clicking or typing has any effect on the windows,
although animated windows seem to continue acting as normal (e.g.,
Amarok vizualizations). Ctrl-Alt-F1 does switch to a terminal, but
nothing affects the desktop session. After the delay, the end session
dialog comes up as normal and shutdown or restart work normally.
Clicking cancel and selecting "Quit..." from the System menu again
without ending the session causes another 30-60 second pause.

Occasionally (less than 5% of the time) the end session dialog comes up
without an unusual delay, but I haven't been able to tell the reason
why. I've gotten this bug with and without using Compiz. It only seems
to happen in Gnome, although the only basis for comparison was a quick
test run with KDE4.
