@Leo: May I suggest the following? - Authorize the hardy-proposed channel and install the 2.6.24.20 kernel and the related 2.6.24.20 modules. It will create a new module directory for this kernel (differnent from the .19 one). If your problem comes from something gone wrong when upgrading gutsy to hardy, this may solve your problem. OR - Download the Hardy Live CD, and boot on it to see if you get sound. If it does, a clean install is your best shot.
