PS: My brother somehow managed to uninstall xserver-xorg during the upgrade. This may have caused the trouble as well. However, after installing that package, it now complains about "manual modifications"... "not replacing /etc/X11/X" even with the dpkg-reconfigure command suggested in Xorg.conf.
