While this so far hasn't been a data-loss issue, It may become one,
since it doesn't only apply to USB flash drives, but also USB powered
laptop harddrive enclosures.
When unmounting my specific hard drive (WesternDigital Elements 250GB),
as well as the light remaining on, the HDD platters continue to spin
indefinitely. My only option is to unplug it while it's spinning. I'm
sure this isn't good for the drive.
On the other hand, I have the same issue in windows with particular
drive (disks continue spinning after being "safely removed"). It might
just be a badly designed drive (lsusb, below, says it's self-powered,
which is wrong), and in that case, powering it down would probably have
the same effect as simply unplugging it.
