Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

On intrepid ibex but observed infrequently with all versions of Ubuntu.
Gnome-settings-daemon 2.23.6-0ubuntu1.

If I forcefully shut down the X server (Control-Alt-Backspace) then
login again, there will be no theme applied (it gets the ugly grey
boxish theme). No messages come up (however in earlier versions of
ubuntu they would). I found that now, in Intrepid, this bug is
reproducible 100% of the time.

If I right-click on the desktop and click on "Change Desktop
Background", I get a GNOME message saying that the gnome settings daemon
failed to start, that it could be a Bonobo problem, etc. After this
message and a short delay, the themes come back up, and the desktop
looks normal again.

** Affects: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
