Same problem here (since 2005!) It is one of the main reasons why I can
not rely on Ubuntu w/ Evolution in a Microsoft dominated environment.
Stability and performance are main usability factors. If it was me, I
would invest into these two factors before making the user interface
more eye candy. (I am saying this just in the context of the ongoing
user experience and usability discussions.)
