One thing I've noticed is that the whine is only present when recording at certain sample rates. For instance, recording in Audacity at the default 44100Hz gives me the horrible whine. Recording at 48000Hz causes the whine to completely disappear. It also doesn't seem to be present (or at least not really noticable) when recording at 8000Hz.
