I have a similar problem. I was using an onboard nVidia 6100 (or similar, can't remember exactly) card with the nvidia-glx-new driver in Hardy, which performed fine in Compiz but only got me 15 - 25 fps in Half-Life 2. I bought a new 9600 GT and when I installed it, everything worked fine, except that I was getting the same performance as the old card...The driver didn't detect the card properly (it said GPU 0 - Unknown in nvidia-settings), but it still worked. So, I decided to try the new nvidia drivers - I downloaded them from the nVidia site and tried to install them. This didn't work at all, so in 800x600 vesa mode I upgraded to Intrepid and installed the nvidia-drivers-173, which worked, but everything was really choppy.
So, I upgraded to nvidia-drivers-177, and everything is still choppy. Furthermore, xorg is taking up 40 - 60% CPU all the time, and Compiz just crashes when I log in... -- [interpid] nvidia drivers causes stutter in all 3D applications https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/252421 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
