The /proc/version of daily build 20080812 which runs O.K. (for an alpha) CD Live and installed, says: Ubuntu 2.6.26-5.14-generic
Alpha 4 also gets black screen and unresponsive keyboard. Booting Alpha 4 CD Live with quiet splash removed: -- messages look fairly normal to me, typical boot stream. -- X starts -- screen goes brown with cursor -- "User ubuntu will login in x seconds" message so I let it log in -- screen goes brown with cursor -- bunch of clucking out of CD drive -- screen goes black with no cursor. Flashing black. Ctrl-Alt-F1 & F2 no luck. Beat keys around a bit. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace finally got a text screen. Keyboard unresponsive on Ctrl-Alt-F1, did get a command line on Ctrl-Alt-F2. /proc/version Linux version 2.6.26-5-generic ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 4.3.1 (Ubuntu 4.3.1-8ubuntu3) ) #1 SMP Sun Aug 10 20:30:28 UTC 2008 less /var/syslog says Fatal X error I don't notice anything unusual in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. >From CD Live, mounted a hard drive partition and copied syslog onto it. Booted installed 20080812 on the R31 and networked syslog over onto this system, attached. Let me know if I can provide anything else. From this user's standpoint sure looks like an X windows problem. Included in the updates that black screen the X31 are: xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-geode xserver-xorg-video-intel xserver-xorg-video-radeon >From lspci -vvnn the Thinkpad R31 uses Intel Corporation 82830 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller] [8086:3577] [rev 04] Let me try CD Live (install if I have to) and do just the xserver-xorg- video-intel update. Maybe later this evening. Thanks for your comments on this bug.
