I observe the same trouble on the hp pavilion hdx9494nr notebook.  I was
unable to hear anything through the main speakers, although I was able
to hear through the headphone jack.  I'm not sure what caused it to
start working as it took me quite a while to figure out how to get to
the volume control, so I went through alsamixer and gnome-alsamixer
before fiddling with "volume control", and I didn't realize until
halfway through the experiment that the main speakers would
automatically shut off when the headphones are plugged in.

So far as I can tell, the problem is just that the "Front" nob doesn't
have any effect, and the "Surround" nob, which does have an effect, is
hidden by default.
