Hello I've seen exactly the same problem since upgrading to edgy from Dapper (machine is a T43 IBM laptop). When the machine boots it complains that the swap partition (in my case /dev/sda10) is not in the correct format, formating using the command mkswap -v1 /dev/sda10 and swapon -a enables swap. Under Dapper I was able to hibernate the machine and it would recover, under edgy once I enable swap in the manner discribed above I can suspend the machine but it will not recover, it just reboots.
