A quick update on this bug... As of Intrepid, Ubuntu will install Recommended packages by default. So both packages, libcrypt-simple-perl and libsexymm2, are now installed with checkgmail.
How ever, the perl bindings for libsexymm2 are still missing from the Ubuntu archive.
