Public bug reported:

Using Gutsy 7.10.

Quite often I get a problem where XMMS fails to open. It stays minimized
in Gnome's bottom task bar and I can't get rid of it. The last time this
happened, I was in the middle of shutting down VLC after watching a DVD,
so it may be to do with conflicts in the sound driver or something.

After XMMS has crashed in this way, I can't open anything else. I cannot
open the terminal or System Monitor. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace does nothing and
I have no way of shutting down the computer. I have to hard reset the
computer. I cannot use Ctrl-Alt-F1, F2 etc. either.

The Gnome menus continue to work and I can open Nautilus windows and
perform basic file operations, but no further programs will open.

Whilst this is a bug with XMMS, clearly Gnome/Ubuntu should be
protecting itself against whatever damage is being caused by the bug in
XMMS.

I use XMMS as it is the best media player I have found, and I don't use
Hardy because it crashes completely every 10 to 20 minutes.
