Oliver, F5 only rebuilds the thumbnails for the current view. This is not useful for large albums. It is also not useful for albums containing sub-albums.
By the way, I think there should be an option to have digiKam give the thumbnailing process for rebuilding all thumbnails a low nice-value like 10 or so.
