Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I'm going to go ahead and report this on the Intel driver because I've had a
lot of issues I never had with an Nvidia card.
I tried the rain plugin for Compiz, and it turned everything on the screen a
beige color, and the window borders were a slightly different color, but all of
it blank.
I think this driver has some problems creating the Compiz images for effects,
because it can't display cube caps or sky dome for the cube rotation, either.

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
        Subsystem: Dell Unknown device 022f
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
        Memory at fea00000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=1M]
        Memory at e0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
        I/O ports at eff8 [size=8]

** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
