** Description changed:

  Ubuntu Intrepid
  "uname -a"
  Linux jcollier-notebook 2.6.26-5-generic #1 SMP Fri Aug 15 13:54:22 UTC 2008
x86_64 GNU/Linux

  "cat /proc/asound/cards"
   0 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xf6480000 irq 21

  "dpkg -s linux-ubuntu-modules-$(uname -r)"
Package `linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.26-5-generic' is not installed and no info
is available.

The best way I can describe this is:
After an arbitrary amount of time playing the audio (in any player) repeats
its last 1/2 second or so of playing several times.
i.e. In a song containing the words, "hello there", I might here
  "helololololo there"

I've attached a valgrind log of rhythmbox playing.

This happens whenever _ANY_ audio is played, not specific to rhythmbox,
  including sound from video.
+
+ #NOTE: When Totem or rhythmbox play the video or audio they will stop
+ playback completely and stop responding, VLC and kaffeine will echo.
