Ok. Files test.rb, auto_migrations.rb behave as described above (auto- highlighting DOES NOT work).
File this_file_works.rb behaves correctly (auto-highlighting DOES work). Obviously, my Gedit could recognize that some file is ruby when first line is "#!/usr/bin/env ruby".
