Hello again. I now have it working, having compiled the r8168 driver (v8.008) 
from source:

I also had to blacklist r8169 and do depmod & mkinitramfs to include the new 
driver. I did so using instructions on this page:

I think this is a serious regression because it used to work in Hardy
(8.04 and 8.04.1) for me with the generic kernel without any fiddling.
