Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Could you try again after a fresh install? I don't see
the problem happening in Intrepid. In case it happens again, simply add
init=/bin/bash
to the kernel boot-options in grub. Then you can set a root password and
have your system restored.
