Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: gnome-control-center
The majority of resolution problems in the Ubuntu forums appear to be
caused by incorrect or missing EDID information. Either the monitors are
not generating this information or the graphics cards are not passing it
on. Having a simple display of the information that is being used to
calculate the available resolutions would help the user to determine the
cause of their resolution problem.
Ideally, this information should be editable, to enable the user to put
in the values from their monitor manual. This should automatically set
HorizSync and VertRefresh values in the Monitor section, and set UseEDID
to False in the Device section, of xorg.conf, or wherever the new tools
set X configuration values.
For the majority of users, this information would not be necessary, and
would simply be informative, since their resolutions will have been
automatically picked up and set. For those users where this had not
happened, it would be an invaluable tool to troubleshoot their problem
and to fix it without having to learn about manually configuring X or
interpreting the text of the log files.
