Public bug reported:

I had created a 1 GB bootable USB Flash Drive containing the LiveCD
version of Kubuntu Dapper in July 2006. Here is a post with the details
of how I did it:
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1229101&postcount=158. It
worked perfectly.

When Edgy was released, I repeated the same procedure with the Edgy LiveCD
(kubuntu-6.10-desktop-i386.iso) but this time it fails to complete the boot
process. GRUB successfully locates both partitions on the flash drive (FAT32
partition for the files and ext2 partition for the casper-rw portion). The
kernel loads and detects hardware including the flash drive and identifies the
two partitions as sdb1 and sdb2. When the init scripts start to run the process
fails and I'm left at a busybox prompt. There is nothing mounted in /cdrom or
in /boot/cdrom. I have copied the content of the casper.log file below:

*************************************************

If I try again but this time I leave the CD in the drawer and then boot
from the USB flash drive, then at the time when the init scripts begin
to run the filesystem is located on the CD-ROM and the boot process
completes successfully and everything works.

It appears that the init scripts in Dapper were able to locate the
squashfs file on the USB flash drive but the scripts in Edgy cannot and
thus fail.
