Further information:

I've tried removing the keyboard/mouse and I still got the same problem,
so maybe that's not it?

I have a wireless card that's a Belkin F5D7000 with a realtek rtl8185
chipset. Is the rtl8180 kernel module loaded by default in Alpha 4? If
so, I can try removing the wireless card from the PC and see if I can
get into gnome then.

Sorry that there isn't more technical info in this, but I can try
different things that anyone suggests in order to resolve this.
