The Key for get out of the slideshow mode is Esc, that works fine for me i don't have any issues and we don't have a report about that either. Which video card do you have and which driver are you using? May you give it a try with an Intrepid live cd? Did f-spot crashed with you get the log? there's no crash indication in there, thanks again.
