Public bug reported:
I have two 500GB WD5000aaks drives on both channels of Silicon Image (Sil31122)
controller (built-in nforce2 board/Abit NF7-s v2);
and one old 120GB PATA drive. Other hardware: AthlonXP3.2ghz(32bit), 1Gbram.
Kernel 2.6.24-19 on Ubuntu. Knoppix 2.6.24
No matter how I copy data between SATA drives (tried Knoppix as well);
no matter the method(dd conv=notrunc; cp -a;GUI); copying SIGNIFICANT
amount of data(>~20GB) produces errors; which appear in fsck. DD once
(if=sda,of=sdb) did errors in partiton table, so data partition was not
visible at all to fdisk.
Copying via PATA DOES work however(!) : cp -a /mnt/sda5/* /mnt/hdc5 ; cp
-a /mnt/hdc5/* /mnt/sdb5.
dmesg shows no errors. I unmounted the drives on dd; did "swapoff -a" for
knoppix.
Windows/dos based utilities copy data without errors.
All drives pass offline SMART test. Good smart table, no bad blocks. Cables are
ok. Temps ok. CPU not overclocked.
Tried to repartition and use different partiton sizes.
