I'm using Xfce at the moment. As Gnome is just the desktop environment, and not the core of the system, should everything be dependent on Gnome? I moved away from Gnome, because of this problem, ie. I had set the sound in that environment.
I don't know how to configure Pulseaudio. Is that the default sound app, not ALSA?
