On further investigation, I notice that the network is not enabled in
network settings and it does not seem to have picked up the info from
/etc/network/interfaces, where wlan0 is defined.  If I try to enable an
interface it seems to want to call it eth0

Also I notice that in /etc/default the wpasupplicant file has been
copied to w*.bak
