Thanks for looking into this issue -

per your requst I started the app  at the command prompt by:
myprompt> evolution &
[1] 6556
myprompt>
---several lines of blank lines---then:
evolution-shell-Message: Killing old version of evolution-data-server...
BBDB spinning up...

At this point the program seems to work fine, and the backend process
does not quit.  I'll test the gui startup later because if I close the
term session so does Evolution in this mode.
