Thanks, could you attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log from one of these
failures on Intrepid, along with the full output from startx and the
/etc/X11/xorg.conf that you used?
Also, just in case, can you also see what happens if you run with no
xorg.conf? (Boot the live cd, then sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak, then log out and log back in). The
/var/log/Xorg.0.log from this would be useful to have as well.
