Perhaps you're looking in the wrong place.  gnome-nettool doesn't
display wireless networks.  Try Network Manager instead
(System/Administration/Network/Connections/Wireless Connection/).

BTW, on my HP laptop, the blue wireless-status LED never comes on under
Hardy -- as it did under Gutsy, and still does under XP -- but my
wireless networking still works fine.
