Thanks very much for the update.

I should be clear, the problem was easily fixed by manually copying
packages during the install process. I'm not certain how upgrading the
kernel will help, because the problem was in a bad CD read. I've since
manually fixed the system and have it running well.

My problem report was a feature request that there be an option to
re-install packages that failed to install. Like maybe when a package
fails to install, the ubuntu installer would a) Let you try to install
the package again, and b) let you choose the source for the package.
