Public bug reported:
I have an external USB drive (well, an enclosure with an IDE hard disk)
that, until a week or so ago, has been working perfectly. As long as I
plug in the USB cable and/or power after KDE has booted (or if they're
plugged in, just unplug the USB cable and plug it back in), I'll get an
icon resembling a USB thumb drive (and identifying my drive's capacity
correctly) on my desktop and a Konqueror window will pop up, showing the
drive's contents, just like one would expect. As long as I "Safely
Remove" before I unplug, I can unplug/replug and power off/on as much as
I want without any problems.
Something changed in the last few days to a week (probably a software
update?) that has caused the drive to misbehave. Now, if the drive is
plugged in (even if it's powered OFF, it seems) before KDE has started,
it just will not automatically mount anymore. I do not get an icon on
the desktop when KDE refuses to mount it.
Unplugging and re-connecting the USB cable does not help.
Cycling the drive's power does not help.
Rebooting the computer does not help (if the drive remains plugged in).
The only thing that does help is to unplug either cable and force a
restart of X with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. I can then plug the cables in and
power it on (if not already), and a drive icon and window showing the
drive's contents will appear like normal, at least the first time.
After that, it's anybody's guess. It may ignore me, or it may behave
properly, or it might even pop up a window demanding my password (!),
claiming that this is an *internal* drive and that I don't have
permission to mount it (HUH??).
Dmesg indicates that the drive is detected by the kernel every time I
plug it in, regardless of what KDE does with it, and I can mount it
manually from the command line without any problems, any time I want.
So the hardware is clearly fine, and the kernel (2.6.24-19-generic) is
working properly.
This affects KDE 3.5.9 and 3.5.10, though I suspect it is not actually
KDE's fault (maybe HAL or DBUS?).
