Fabio, with /boot on a software raid ( md ) only lilo can be used currently as it has special support for detecting the md raid and installing its boot sector properly to each of the underlying devices. Grub does not have such support, so must manually be installed to each of the underlying devices separately.
Gill, are the only drives in this system the pair in the raid1? If so then are you sure that the kernel sees hde and hdg? If the kernel sees both drives rather than one, then it looks like this is not a hardware raid, but a fakeraid which is currently only minimally supported in a do it yourself way. You will find that most distributions will not properly support this out of the box. The simplest thing to do is disable the fakeraid support and use plain software raid.
