Public bug reported:

Intel HDA in 2.6.27 seems to be broken. In .26, plugging in headphones
would automatically mute the speaker and use the headphones.
Occasionally the state of the speakers would break, but you could toggle
it manually through the ALSA driver's "Speaker" switch. In .27, the ALSA
mixer controls are much less, and this option is missing, and there are
no others to choose whether to use the headphone port or not.
