Working my way through
http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/DriTroubleshooting

'dmesg | grep drm' output has an error (attached) that I can't fathom,
however Xorg.0.log claims "Direct rendering enabled" so it can't be too
fatal.

The next two attachments are the standard output and standard error when
running 'glxinfo'.

There are no more troubleshooting steps in that document. But running
'glxgears' freezes the system instantly, Xorg at 99% CPU. strace
attaches to the Xorg process but then freezes itself.
