Public bug reported:
Hi, I am very grateful to the development team who make this OS possible. I am
a first-time user of Linux and I chose the Wiki_Kubuntu because I could put it
on the hard disk drive and run it off the same laptop as my Windows Vista OS.
I have tried a few of the Live CD/DVD systems, but they are slow. I also tried
a system running off of a 2GB USB flash memory stick-but this Wiki idea has won
me over the best.
Anyhow, I am not a Linux developer, but I have had minimum exposure to some
programming and therefore would like to report some bugs that I have
experienced using Kubuntu.
SETTING UP THE CONFIGURATION (klicking on the System Setup icon)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It took a long time to get the setup I wanted because this tool kept 'bombing
out' or freezing up many times and sometimes when I thought the changes were
successful, nothing had taken effect after a reboot. In fact completely
different scree setups sometimes resulted. Here are some of the messages I got.
1. A 'KNOTIFY' screen told me about some kind of bug and that SIGSEGV failed.
2. The program does not set the Number Lock to 'ON' even though the box is
still checked for that to happen.
3. Error messages while configuring the Konsole Terminal.
4. While launching the Konsole Terminal program error message appears in a
frame entitled "Sorry. Plasma Workspace" ... with message ... "KDEInit could
not launch /usr/bin/Konsole", even though Konsole WAS launched successfully.
And finally;
5. I wanted to copy my own personal wallpaper file to the folder path:
/root/usr/lib/kde4/share/wallpapers so that I could import that wallpaper via
the 'Configure Desktop - Plasma Workspace'. I finally succeeded in doing this,
however it took a lot of 'painful trials'. Now this one may not be a bug,
because I probably do not know enough about how to use the 'sudo' command
properly, but I thought I'd tell you about it just in case you can give me some
advice for my learning experience.
'sudo' did not work for me in various combinations, and I do not know why, so I
did what the information on sudo told users NOT TO DO. I entered "sudo -i" to
obtain root privileges and when when I was finished the entered "sudo -l passwd
root" to reset things to the original state. I guess I was lucky this time
because everything worked out well and I copied the wallpaper file and
installed it successfully. Perhaps someone can direct me to information on how
to do this sort of think more safely in Kubuntu.
Thank you for your time, and I hope that perhaps I have added some useful
information to this project. I look forward to running a stable version of
this OS. By the way I tried the Live/DVD version of Sabayon and loved it!
But it was very, very slow from the DVD and hopefully someone will put it into
the Wiki format so that I can load it up without having to partition my disk.
Thank you again,
Walt Dutchak
